about

"Original Sufferhead" is about coming from a place of a lot of hardship and hopelessness and loving yourself enough to keep going. A sufferhead in Nigerian Pidgin English is someone on whom suffering is heaped. In 1981, the renowned genius Fela Kuti released a song called “Original Sufferhead” referring to Nigerian peoples’ intractable socioeconomic, emotional, and sociopolitical poverty. The use of the word ‘original’ is meant to express the gravity of the suffering, to say in essence that it belongs to us, that we were the very first ones to suffer like this, that we are the defacto receptacle for suffering. There is the connotation also, I think, of women (and men) carrying heavy loads on their heads in the way we have seen many African people- especially women- do.

lyrics

When the road gets so tough and I can’t help
And I say I don’t have enough to keep on going
When the road gets so tough
There’s no windows, there’s no windows
Let me tell you I’m a fighter
Let me tell you I’m a struggler
I’m the original sufferhead.
